Degree and Junior college Lecturers eligibility - UGC relaxes tough norms

Relief to hundreds of aspiring teachers in universities, the UGC has relaxed norms that introduced in last year for appointment of teaching faculty. It has exempted those students from clearing the mandatory NET who had enrolled for their Ph.D programme before June 11, 2009.
Also, students holding Ph.Ds from reputed foreign universities will be exempted from appearing for the NET. They need to submit applications to the UGC, which will be scrutinized by an expert panel that will grant exemption.
According to officials of the higher education department, the decision to relax the norms was taken based on the recommendations of a UGC panel committee set up in August this year to check the concerns raised by aspiring teachers and universities. Though the UGC has relaxed some norms, it has also come out with tougher entry norms for teachers in universities along with stringent norms for admissions in Ph.D programmes as there had been some concern over the quality of Ph.D scholars and their research in several universities.(IwwH)
