Japanese quake leaves Nifty trembling

Indian equity benchmarks shattered on the back of an earthquake in the northeast coast of Japan. The benchmark Sensex shed more than 200 points and the 50-share NSE Nifty slipped below 5450 level at 12:30 hours, dragged down by technology, metal, auto, realty, telecom, infrastructure and financial stocks. Reliance Industries too was down.

According to Reuters, a massive 8.8 magnitude quake hit the northeast coast of Japan on Friday, shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo, causing many injuries, at least one fire and triggering a four-metre (13-ft) tsunami, NHK television and witnesses reported.

The Nikkei 225 average closed down 1.7% at 10,254.43 points after the earthquake struck. India Tsunami Centre says there are no local alerts yet in wake of Japanese quake.

Rs 400 cr fraud at Citibank; top clients duped

New Delhi: A banking fraud which could run into a whopping Rs 400 crore has been unearthed at leading multinational lender Citibank's Gurgaon (Haryana) branch.
Gurgaon Police Commissioner S S Deswal said an FIR under sections of cheating and forgery against a bank employee and three others has been lodged and 18 accounts having close to Rs 4 crore frozen.
Sources said funds amounting to Rs 400 crore of 20 high networth customers has been siphoned off.
The fraud is said to be a handiwork of Shivraj Puri, the employee who is alleged to have sold investment products to high networth clients claiming that they would generate unusually high returns.
It is also alleged that Puri, who is named in the FIR, showed a forged notification of market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India for obtaining funds from customers.
He is also accused of claiming that these products were authorised by the bank's investment product committee.
The bank in a statement said, "We immediately reported the matter to all the relevant regulatory and law enforcement authorities. Identified suspicious transactions have been isolated and we are providing full assistance to the authorities in their investigations."
Sources said Puri allegedly sought deposits from high networth customers in lucrative schemes but transferred the funds to some fictitious accounts.
Funds amounting to Rs 400 crore belonging to about 20 customers were transferred to such accounts, they said.
"We recently initiated an investigation into a certain set of suspicious transactions based on documents forged by an employee involving a few accounts in our Gurgaon branch," the bank statement said.
The bank said the issue did not impact other accounts or transactions or customers of the bank.
The fraud comes to light a month after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) uncovered bribery-for-loan racket leading to arrest of many senior officials of the banks and financial institutions.
The bank officials allegedly colluded with the firm to sanction large scale corporate loans, overriding mandatory conditions for such approvals along with other irregularities.
CBI has arrested CEO of LIC Housing Finance and seven others senior bankers including Naresh K Chopra, Secretary (Investment), LIC, R N Tayal, General Manager of Bank of India and Maninder Singh Johar, Director (Chartered Accountant) of Central Bank of India.

Ajmal Kasab given death, judge says no scope of reform

Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai: Justice was finally delivered to the 166 people who lost their lives in the 26/11 carnage. Seventeen months after the trial began, lone surviving Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab was on Thursday sentenced to death for complicity in the most audacious terrorist attack ever on India.

Special Judge ML Tahaliyani, who conducted the trial of Kasab for nearly a year in the high security central prison at Arthur Road in Central Mumbai, read out the death sentence at 1.28 pm to a packed court room, in Kasab’s presence.

"Kasab shall be hanged by the neck until death," Special Tahaliyani said while reading out the sentence awarded to the 22-year-old lone surviving terrorist in the November 26, 2008 carnage in which 166 people were killed.

Will Kasab get death? India awaits sentence

Will Kasab get death? India awaits sentence
Mumbai: More than 17 months after one of the most horrific terror attacks in India which left a 166 dead and over 300 injured, the only gunman to be captured alive during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks will know his fate.
Hours from now, the special court will pronounce the quantum of punishment for Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab in what's perhaps India's most awaited sentencing. On Monday, the court headed by Sessions Judge M L Tahliyani found Kasab guilty of murder and waging war against the nation.
The 26/11 trial has also been one of the shortest that the country has seen so far. In February 25, 2009 the Mumbai Crime Branch filed the chargesheet running into more than 11,000 pages. It contained statements of 2000 witnesses, named 35 Pakistani nationals as wanted accused.
In May 6, 2009 the special sessions court framed 86 charges against Kasab and co-accused in the case. Over the next seven months, it examined 658 witnesses, including FBI agents. Evidence including CCTV footage, telephonic intercepts, forensic and scientific reports, was also submitted to the court.
In June 2009, non-bailable warrants are issued against 22 absconders including Hafeez Saeed and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi. By March 23, 2010 final arguments have concluded.
"We had to complete the charge sheet within 90 days. At no cost we wanted to take a day extra as there was international scrutiny and everybody's eyeballs were on Mumbai Police," says ATS Chief Rakesh Maria.
