Reading Comprehension

Mount Vesuvius, a volcano located between the ancient Italian cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, has received much attention because of its frequent and destructive eruptions. The most famous of these eruptions occurred in A. D. 79. The volcano had been inactive for centuries. There was little warning of the coming eruption, although one account unearthed by archaeologists says that a hard rain and a strong wind had disturbed the celestial calm during the preceding night. Early the next morning, the volcano poured a huge river of molten rock down upon Herculaneum, completely burying the city and filling in the harbor with coagulated lava. Meanwhile, on the other side of the mountain, cinders, stone and ash rained down on Pompeii. Sparks from the burning ash ignited the combustible rooftops quickly. Large portions of the city were destroyed in the conflagration. Fire, however, was not the only cause of destruction. Poisonous sulphuric gases saturated the air. These heavy gases were not buoyant in the atmosphere and therefore sank toward the earth and suffocated people. Over the years, excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum have revealed a great deal about the behavior of the volcano. By analyzing data, much as a zoologist dissects a specimen animal, scientist have concluded that the eruption changed large portions of the area's geography. For instance, it turned the Sarno River from its course and raised the level of the beach along the Bay of Naples. Meteorologists studying these events have also concluded that Vesuvius caused a huge tidal wave that affected the world's climate. In addition to making these investigations, archaeologists have been able to study the skeletons of victims by using distilled water to wash away the volcanic ash. By strengthening the brittle bones with acrylic paint, scientists have been able to examine the skeletons and draw conclusions about the diet and habits of the residents. Finally, the excavations at both Pompeii and Herculaneum have yielded many examples of classical art, such as jewelry made of bronze, which is an alloy of copper and tin. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius and its tragic consequences have provided us with a wealth of data about the effects that volcanoes can have on the surrounding area. Today volcanologists can locate and predict eruptions, saving lives and preventing the destruction of cities and cultures.

David Goldin is worried about air traffic at the bigger airports.Goldin is the head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He thinks the planes and airports are too crowded. Traffic jams occur because of the number of people that want to travel. According to Goldin, shorter flights from big airports take too much time. If traveling less than 500 miles, from your home to your destination, the travel time would average about 80 miles an hour. Right now, there isn't any technology that can ease the problem. What can be done to help passengers and planes go faster yet still be safe in the air and at the airports? NASA's Goldin is calling for big changes. He sees the needs to reinvent the airline industry. To make air travel cheaper, safer, and faster, an aviation revolution must occur. NASA is already at work on the aviation problems. They are designing a plane that flies eight times as fast as the speed of sound. When a system fails on the plane, built-in intelligence will automatically correct the problem. This new aircraft, the F-15, has wings that change shape. The jet engines don't have moving parts, but they have instruments that help pilots follow a sky highway. In Texas, at the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport, NASA has improved runaway spacing. Because their air traffic is handled better, fewer runways are needed. Runways won't be needed for some of the NASA designed airplanes. Goldin states that planes will be much quieter and won't need runways. New planes will have fewer if any emissions. A new cargo plane built by Boeing can land at 45 miles per hour. It needs a landing strip the size of two football fields. The Boeing plane doesn't have a tail and that's why it can land in smaller areas than most cargo planes. Boeing's Lorin Bliss says that the removal of the tail section lowers the cost of planes. Also, there is less drag from the plane. NASA is hard at work on new bold ideas. According to Goldin, some ideas will fail but other will succeed. He looks for America to fly higher and safer in the next century.

B. Putting the plane in neutral gear

18. New aircraft will allow pilots to follow _________ .
A. Cargo planes that are overloaded
B. Other planes in any kind of weather.
C. Geese flying in a formation
D. A highway in the sky

19. Daniel Goldin wants airplanes that ________ .

About 1 in 15 households drink bottled water today, spending about $4 billion a year on it. Although the reasons for the trend are many, bottled water's perceived health benefits fall near the top of the list. Surveys have found that about 25 percent of bottled water drinkers choose the beverage for health and safety reasons; another quarter believe it is pure and free of contaminants. Regardless of its pristine image, bottled water is not necessarily any purer or more healthful than what flows right out of the tap. Consider that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the bottled water industry watchdog, does not require that bottled water meet higher standards for quality, such as the maximum level of contaminants, than public water supplies regulated by the EPA. For the most part, the FDA simply follows EPA's regulatory lead. Granted, bottled water is often filtered to remove chemicals such as chlorine that may impart a certain taste. But that doesn't make it any safer. In fact, about 25 to 40 percent of bottled water comes from the same municipal water supplies as tap water. Furthermore, some bottled waters do not contain any or enough of the fluoride needed to fight cavities. The only way to determine whether a certain water contains the mineral is to check with the company that bottles it. This is not to say that bottled water is necessarily any better or worse, from a health standpoint, than tap water. It's certainly preferable to tap water for those who like its taste. The problem is that many consumers pay 300 to 1,200 times more per gallon for bottled water than for tap water because they think bottled water is the more healthful of the two. Bottlers add to the confusion by sprinkling terms such as "pure," "crystal pure," and "premium" on labels illustrated with pictures of glaciers, mountain streams, and waterfalls, even when the water inside comes from a public reservoir. However, the FDA has set forth regulations mandating clear labeling of bottled waters. The mini glossary of bottled waters explains what some of the terms used on bottles really mean.
