Bartholin Gland Cyst: How To Get Rid Of Abscess In Bartholin Gland

What Is Bartholin Gland Cyst

The Bartholin gland is found on either side of the lips of the vagina or the labia and is near to the vaginal opening. Their function is to produce the fluid that helps lubricate the vagina.
However, if a flap of skin happens to cover up these glands, the fluid tends to back up causing a swelling that can vary from being penny sized to the size of a golf ball. This cyst can be extremely tender to the touch and although most of them are not infected, some of them can be. If infected, the cyst becomes what is known as an abscess and it usually contains bacteria found on the surface of your skin. Sometimes the bacteria found in the cyst can be transmitted sexually and it may remain relatively painless at first, but gradually become painful and grow in size. In time, sexual intercourse can cause a great deal of pain and a doctor will have to be consulted immediately. Sometimes the cyst breaks open, leaking fluid and it then heals and closes up. If not, the only way to get rid of the abscess is at the doctor’s where s/he will make a tiny incision across the cyst to drain out the fluid. Stitches will then be required to close the incision. It would be useful to use panty liners to soak up the fluid that may leak out for the next few days. The cyst may recur after a gap of several years and they can be treated similarly. If the pain is severe and you become feverish, you will have to consult a doctor as the infection will have to be dealt with medically. Some women opt for a complete surgical removal of the gland. If the gland and duct are removed or if an incision has been made and stitches put in, it would help to not have sex for at least a month till it heals completely.
Do not douche the area and use cotton panties that are comfortable to wear. Soak your panties in hot water and use a few drops of fabric disinfectant to kill possible germs. Consult your physician about this so that you have an idea of possible risk factors and preventive measures.Eat a healthy balanced diet to speed up the healing process. Your diet should include whole grains, green leafy vegetables, fruits, pulses, sprouts and nuts. Drink about 4-5 liters of water to clear out any toxins that have accumulated in your body.
