Now Streetlights to have GSM tech in Nellore corporation shortly

To conserve power and save on electrical bills, the fund starved Nellore corporation is all set to use the global system for mobile communication (GSM) technology to operate 27,027 streetlights across the Nellore. These are being operated manually since ages and are connected to 1,620 odd junction boxes, switching dependent on the mood of 50 odd workers. For instance, street lights glow even after sunrise and are often not switched on even after nightfall, especially in localities away from the main town. According to system, the 1,620 junction boxes will be reduced to half, and GSM modems containing SIM cards and timers will replace the age old switches. Software has been developed to control the entire operation of streetlights, sitting in front of a computer system in the civic body. The modem will automatically generate SMS's and forward these to the controlling system about power failure, voltage, load and number of lights. more over 300 streetlights are already connected to a modem on a trial basis and the results are very encouraging. Nellore corporation pays power bills to the extent of Rs 25 lakh every month and this technology will save not less than Rs 5 lakh per month to start with maintains.
